School Closings

 Boonton School District Weather Notification

The top priority of the Boonton School District during the winter season is the safety of our students and staff members.  The decision to open or close our schools in bad weather is based on a careful analysis of all relevant factors.

Your Superintendent of Schools gives careful consideration to:

1.      Road conditions, not only in Boonton, but also of those routes most commonly taken by staff;

2.      Amount of snow and ice accumulated;

3.      Reports of continuing precipitation;

4.      Building conditions (such as whether we have electricity and heat);

5.      Parking lot & sidewalk conditions;

6.      Temperature and wind chill;

7.      Weather predictions;

8.      Reports from the Lincoln Park High School Students’ Bus Company (it is the law that buses are not to be on the roads unless they are completely de-iced and do not have any snow on the roofs);

9.      What other school districts are doing (we attempt to coordinate our decision when appropriate with Lincoln Park, Morris County Vo-Tech, and neighboring districts).

If the Boonton Schools need to be closed due to weather conditions, parents and staff are contacted by our automated communication system known as Honeywell Instant Alert.  This system uses contact information provided by staff members and our students’ families.  If you would like to change the number(s) that are in our system, please contact your respective school secretary.

In the event of an early dismissal, the Instant Alert system will alert ALL submitted numbers provided and housed on our data base for all students.  A traditional phone chain will also be utilized to insure parental contact for our elementary and middle school children.  Notices will be put out in the local Wal-Mart and Grocery Store.  Information will also be placed on all web pages on our site.

For full day snow/inclement weather closings, please check www.boontonschools.org for up-to-date notification.  You may also tune into WABC-TV, News 12 NJ, Good Day NY-TV, WMTR/WDHA, and WOR.  If you remain uncertain, you may also contact our schools’ main numbers.

Please keep in mind, your Superintendent of Schools must make the decision to close schools by 5:00 a.m. or earlier so that radio and TV stations may be notified, our web site updated, and the Instant Alert System be activated. Although your Superintendent tries to make the best decision possible, no perfect decision exists.  If you do not feel it is safe for your child to attend school, use your best judgment on whether he or she should attend.

If there is a need for a delayed opening, the schedule is as follows:

Pre School A.M. (Integrated) 10:00 a.m. arrival and 11:50 a.m. dismissal
