A Message from Mr. Robert Sutter, Principal of School Street School

Welcome to the School Street Elementary School Web Page! We are glad you’ve taken time to learn about us. We at School Street School share in a mission of commitment and philosophy which creates an environment where students are encouraged to develop to their full potential. The staff at School Street School is dedicated to providing a wonderful educational experience for all of our students. We develop and foster independent learning for our students in a loving atmosphere which makes children feel welcome at all times. Additionally, our staff is committed to modeling professionalism, positive attitudes, respect for one another, and a deep understanding of the learning process for young children.

With a rich history of student success and a desire to continually improve upon our service, the faculty at School Street School is committed to progressive education. Moreover, the faculty at School Street School is passionate about celebrating and highlighting our students’ rich geographic and cultural diversity. Students learn a great deal about themselves, each other, their community, and the world.

Students range in grade level from pre-school through third. We work hard to keep class size below twenty students. Our teachers focus primarily on literacy. They provide quality guided reading instruction for every child. At School Street School, each child is challenged to read at his or her individual level every day. Quality writing and authorship is highly valued through a balanced literacy approach.

We also develop in our students, a deep understanding of mathematics through problem- solving approaches while using manipulatives and investigations. Our students also undergo daily instruction in the content areas of science and social studies. Instruction in these content areas combines technology, exploration of ideas, research and experimental learning. The staff at School Street School does an excellent job integrating science and social studies with math and language arts.

Students participate in a variety of related arts classes including Physical Education, Art, Music, and Library. Third grade students have the unique opportunity to participate in choir. Our aim is to develop students who will be ready to join our “top notch” secondary school musical program.

We pride ourselves on communication with parents and the community at large. As children grow, we are fully aware that there becomes increasingly important to maintain strong communication ties between home and school. I ask that you please remain as active and involved in your child’s education as possible and I encourage you to speak with your child’s teachers on a regular basis! School is fortunate to enjoy strong parent and community support. A perfect way to get involved in the School Street School Community is through the Parent Teacher Association. This fine group of committed parents organizes fundraisers and activities that benefit both our staff and students. I urge you to consider joining this fine group.

In closing, I am committed to the staff and children of School Street School. I am here to help you at all times. Please do not hesitate to contact me for general information. If you have a specific question, I will do my best to answer it or to direct you to the best source of information. If you feel that a problem remains after an initial conversation with your child’s teacher, I will be available to talk with you as well. It is a true partnership at School Street School. Join with me to make the experiences for our children the best they possibly can be!
