Over the past few years, we have emphasized the critical importance of students being present at school on a consistent basis. While we understand there are valid reasons for students to be absent over the course of a school year, it should only be in very rare circumstances that a student is chronically absent.
In New Jersey, chronic absenteeism occurs when a student misses 10% or more of a school year. For a student enrolled in the entire school year, that equates to 18 school days. Today marks our 20th day of school, which means if your student has been absent 2 or more school days, they are on an early pace to be chronically absent for the school year.
We appreciate your support in ensuring that students are on track to reap the full benefits of their education through their daily presence in school. Should chronic absenteeism become a concern, we will be eager to work with you to develop an attendance improvement plan. We look forward to working together to make the school year a success for every student, and we are grateful for your continued support.
